PUBG or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has become a phenomenon since it launched last year, and its mobile version called PUBG Mobile has garnered a huge player base since its launch this March. PUBG has reached a point of popularity where it has become a part 0f daily conversations between friends, colleagues and fellow students. It’s simple mechanics and engaging team aspect has made it into a game over which team mates can effectively bond over.

Even when the casual gaming scene of PUBG is growing, a professional one has been born as well and we have seen official tournaments of the PC as well as the mobile version of the game being held on an international scale. Some may even call it the biggest phenomenon to hit the world in the year 2018.

Now, according to a new research done by Internet service provider Jana for Quartz, PUBG has qualified to be called the most popular online battle game of the year. It has outdone its major competitors and achieved vote of 61.9 percent of 1,047 Indian respondents to become the most preferred online mobile game. Free Fire became the second most popular after PUBG with a 21.7 percent vote and Epic Games’s Fortnite which has been consistently outdoing PUBG in terms of revenue and players worldwide, came in at third with 8.5 percent vote.

The research even takes into account the most popular reasons why PUBG is played by Indians and 46.2 percent people thought it was better than other games while 24.5 percent played it because everyone was talking about it.

PUBG was initially launched on PCs followed by Xbox and then on smartphones and just recently on PS4. And according to a recent blog post by Gurugram-based video analytics firm Vidooly, “The launch of Jio services brought this revolutionary change and the makers of PUBG couldn’t have asked for a better time to launch in India than in 2018″. And this shows in the number of players that play the game on smartphones compared to the other platforms in India. The ratio is extremely skewed when it comes to the platforms and smartphones rule this segment with a 73.4 percent majority followed by 5.6 percent on PC and a meager 1.1 percent on consoles.

According to the research 24.3 percent people play the game for eight hours or more in a week, followed by 19.4 percent playing it for only two to four hours and 16.3 percent playing it for four to eight hours. The most popular time to play PUBG in India seems to be nighttime.

The other significant revelation from this research is that almost 40 percent of the users have been using PUBG as a social platform. And almost 80 percent people have been making purchases ingame which is a new trend, because India is a “country where internet users are extremely cash-conscious” and 72 percent  users spent up to Rs 350. Most of this money was used to buy ingame clothes and weapon skins.

This shows a changing trend in the Indian gaming community and is it is a positive change to say the least. As for people who didn’t want to play the game, most complained that it was too large an app, and it is a justified reason considering the largest chunk of Indian smartphone users own older budget segment smartphones that don’t come with abundant storage.
