After Facebook, Google and Yahoo, Instagram has released its own Year in Review for 2018. The Year in Review takes a look at how the photo-sharing platform was used during the year and highlights key trends from 2018.
In a release, Instagram says that sharing love and kindness remained a top priority for its community in 2018. The Heart Love Sticker by Arata was the most used Giphy sticker in Stories while Heart Eyes was the most used face filter in Stories. The heart emoji was used in comments over 14 billion times in the feed while the community declared Disneyland Tokyo as the happiest place in the world by hitting the heart button the highest number of times.
This year, ASMR emerged as the top niche community trend of the year on Instagram with “soap cutting, slime popping and makeup shaving continuing its steep rise in popularity”. The game Fortnite has taken over the world by storm and its impact was felt on Instagram as well with #fortnite becoming the highest growth hashtag in 2018.
In India, the top hashtags included #love, #instagood and #fashion while #lovequotes and Heart Love Sticker by Arata were the highest growth hashtag and most used giphy sticker on Instagram Stories in the country. Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad were the top geotagged locations across India in 2018.

In 2018, posts from Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma, M S Dhoni, Akshay Kumar and Jacqueline Fernandez received were the most loved posts in India. However, Instagram will actually be remembered for the birth of biggest viral dance challenge with #inmyfeelingschallenge. It included everyone from @theshiggyshow to @willsmith. The year will also be remembered for those millions of people, who made their voices heard and used hashtags such as #metoo, #timesup, #marchforourlives this year.
