TikTok has achieved a new milestone. This a video app, which gained massive popularity in 2019, beating several key apps in downloads. Now, the popular short-video creating app has crossed 1 billion downloads on Google Play Store, which is huge. The growth seems to have driven by the ongoing lockdown all over the world. Due to lockdown, people are using social media apps to stay connected with others.
Apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram have already seen a huge spike in usage due to COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, TikTok might also have experienced the greatest gains in usage, if the installation numbers are taken into consideration. As per a report released by app analytics firm App Annie, TikTok has bagged the badge of “most downloaded app” among social media apps in India during the ongoing lockdown period.

TikTok is an app that lets users create and share short videos with special effects. Several users also dance, jump, and lip-sync to pop sings and music in the app. Apart from TikTok, WhatsApp, Facebook, Helo, Instagram, and VMate also witnessed high download numbers on App Store or Google Play starting March 22. This information was first reported by Business Today. In terms of usage, Facebook and Instagram reportedly experienced more than 40 percent increase in usage, as per kantar firm.
The spike across all messaging platforms has been the biggest in the 18-34 age group. Across all stages of the pandemic, WhatsApp witnessed the greatest gains in usage. In Spain, the usage of this messaging app increased by 76 percent, which is huge. Countries like China witnessed a 58 percent spike in usage of local social media apps, including Wechat and Weibo. Kantar estimates that for WhatsApp in the early phase of the pandemic usage increases 27 percent, in mid-phase 41 percent. The cited source says that countries in the late phase of the pandemic will see an increase of 51 percent.
